A few years ago, I did a short stint at Reebonz SG, a luxury fashion retailer. While I was there, I helped set up their content platform, Style Files. I love fashion, and enjoy chatting to designers and artists from all over the world. So here’s a small taste of what that’s like:

This week, Jessicacindy, designer and owner of Jessicacindy bespoke bridal boutique talks to us about her style inspirations, most unusual commissions and wanting to leave a mark on the Singapore fashion scene.

What is the inspiration behind your eponymous label?

While I was studying Fashion, I developed an interest in couture and bridal wear which eventually materialised into my eponymous line Jessicacindy. Having had the opportunity to live in many countries, I was very inspired by the different cultures, fashion houses and the many women I met and worked with. I wanted to design beautiful creations for women who I could relate to, and could relate to me.

Why did you decide to open a boutique in Singapore?

Singapore is an extremely international country – a melting pot of people, cultures and fashion influences. Ambitious as it may sound, I want to leave a mark on the fashion scene here. Through designing bespoke and couture bridal pieces, I wanted to help women fulfil their fantasies of wearing their dream dress on their special day.

What were some of the challenges you faced when setting up Jessicacindy?

Since it’s my first business venture – there were the issues of finding the perfect location, as well as marketing and branding strategies. We wanted to present ourselves as the go-to brand for personalised couture gowns. I think experience is also a key part of building a business. It is entirely through experience that my team and I learn to tackle daily challenges.

Describe a Jessicacindy design.

Jessicacindy design is one that celebrates femininity, grace and understated glamour. It is a creation that truly complements its wearer.

How much can one expect to pay for a Jessicacindy creation?

As our dresses are made-to-order, our prices depend on the complexity of the design and materials used. Prices for bespoke wedding dresses begin at S$3,500, while evening gowns start at S$1,700.

Do wedding dresses follow the seasons and trends of fashion? What is the current trend for wedding gowns?

As we specialise in customising wedding gowns, my clients usually share their ideas with me and I try my best to incorporate those elements into the design. I’ll also give a Jessicacindy touch to the dress. plus a few of my own personal touches. Wedding dresses do follow fashion seasons and trends to an extent and that definitely influences my clients’ requirements tastes and preferences – but a lot of other factors come into play.

What was your most memorable encounter designing bespoke dresses for brides?

It would definitely be the ‘starlight’ gown I designed for a bride called Thiang. She asked for her dress to be able to light up. I had to design one that holds a strip of LED lights in the hem of the skirt. When it’s dark, the dress literally glows! The gown can also be transformed – she can wear it as a cocktail dress, ball gown or even wear the bustier separately. It’s very versatile and she can wear it even after her wedding.

Why do you think personalisation is an important business technique that B2C companies should adopt?

Ready-made dresses may not always live up to one’s expectations. There are so many elements to a gown – from material, fit to silhouette, and one may not find all the ideal elements in one piece.

With personalisation and customisation, the appeal is obvious – especially for individuals who don’t necessarily embrace trends and have very specific tastes and preferences.

Any tips for brides-to-be who are looking for the perfect wedding dress?

Be comfortable! Other than actual physical comfort, I think it is very important to find the perfect silhouette and the most flattering fit. A bride has to be confident in her dress. It really needs to suit her. Don’t get caught up with trends and try on as many gowns as you want until you find the perfect one!

Describe your style. Where do you draw style inspirations from?

I’m very adventurous and versatile. I love to constantly experiment with new looks. I’m not really inspired by a specific personality – every woman and girl I meet inspires me. I notice all the little details like how they play with accessories that help to put their look together.

What are some of your favourite labels and why?

Personally, I like Chanel and Hermès for their timeless designs and branding. I always wear my Hermès cuff- it’s versatile and goes well with anything. When I’m feeling a little more adventurous, I wear my favourite Chrome Hearts rings for a more edgy appeal.

Why do you shop on Reebonz? Can you describe your Reebonz experience?

I love the selection of vintage bags and accessories available on Reebonz. It’s so convenient to be able to purchase them online and have it delivered to my doorstep. It doesn’t take long at all and that’s perfect for me – especially because of my hectic work schedule. I like that it is fuss-free user experience.

Being a young entrepreneur, can you share some tips for fellow aspirants who wish to start their own business in the fashion industry?

There is no right or wrong when it comes to the business of fashion. If you believe in your style and taste, you can be confident and others will follow your lead. It’s not only about trends – you also need to find your niche specialty.

Having purchased various items from Reebonz, can you share some of your outfit combinations for the Fall/ Winter season?

I think this Fall/Winter season I’d like to experiment with a softer look. I love wearing black and darker colours but I think comfortable knits in neutral tones with gold accented accessories will look wonderful too.

I think shoppers should be on the look out for accessories with clean lines and strong structure. I think they will serve as a nice juxtaposition against soft Fall/Winter getups.

My main fashion tip – that applies to every season – is to play with layering. You’ll be surprised at how you can achieve so many different looks just by wearing a few key wardrobe staples, paired with the right accessories. Keep experimenting until you find the look that works for you. Never be afraid to try something new.
